那电影院应在乍浦路桥旁, 即原外贸会场。 记得在那里看过几部“内部电影”。 下面照片的左上角就有那电影院的名字- Capitol

作为印度人, Sam Tata 拍摄的角度是有别于那些白人-当时上海真正的主人。 下面是书中的一个有关上海宗族歧视的片段:

。。。。He
(Sam) has always insisted that he never suffered from the racism of
Shanghai, Certainly, his life (作为一个有钱的工厂主儿子)was well cushioned against
it. But it must always have been lurking there. As an Indian, there
were places he could not go. All of his conditioning must have taught
him to
suppress any potential anger or resistance.
    But in the
photographs of the celebrations on Bastille Day at the French Club or
the one taken a little bit later at the swimming pool in the grounds of
the race course, it emerges again in the form of a harsh, satirical
mockery. He is NOT of these people. His sympathies are elsewhere.
Through the camera, he sees them quite differently in man carefully
sweeping up every grain of spilt rice in the street.

At
weekends and on holidays he used to go out on this bicycle and ride
around the Chinese working-class areas of the city. "The Europeans
never went there. They were completely unaware of what was happening.
On surface, the International Settlement was well enough run..."

His
voice grows hard and he smacks his palm of his hand on the desk.
"Beneath it all there was rot and corruption; an immense amount sweated
labour... That was Shanghai in the thirties. There was incredible
poverty, and in fact there were two quite separate systems of justice.
It was common knowledge that if a drunk foreigner  ran over a Chinese,
he could simply pay $400 on the spot, and that would be that."

He
pauses for a moment, then tries to make sure I understand. "You see, it
was a reflection not only of the terrible system that the Europeans had
brought with them, but also of the desperate views which the poor
Chinese had of life. They knew they could not get justice, so they
might as well take $400. Whichever way you looked at it, there ware
complete indifference: a glitter and glamour on the one side, and on
the other side, just nothing."
...
He stops and shakes his head,
over fifty years later and still full of anger at the memory. "Oh, I
thought Shanghai was a rotten place, rotten to the core."
